How I Make Whipped Tallow (and Why I’ll Never Go Back)

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be standing in my kitchen whipping beef fat into a fluffy, luxurious skincare dream, I probably would’ve laughed. And yet… here we are.

Whipped tallow has officially earned a permanent spot in my home. It’s simple, nourishing, affordable, and honestly kind of magical. If you’re curious but intimidated—don’t be. This is one of the easiest (and most satisfying) DIYs I make.

Why I Love Whipped Tallow

Deeply moisturizing (especially for dry skin)

Made with real, traditional ingredients

No fillers, preservatives, or mystery chemicals

Safe for the whole family

A little goes a long way

Plus… whipping it is weirdly fun.

What You’ll Need

Ingredients

Rendered beef tallow (grass-fed if you can) This is the brand I use One whole jar per batch

Vitamin E oil (to help prevent rancidity)

Optional: essential oils (lavender, frankincense, etc.)

Tools

Hand mixer or stand mixer

Mixing bowl

Spatula

Clean glass jar with a lid

Fridge

How I Make Whipped Tallow

Start with tallow that is solid but scoopable, like room-temperature butter. I like to nuke mine, then let it sit on the counter for a bit.

Add a few drops of vitamin E oil per cup of tallow.

Optional: Add a few drops essential oil

Whip for several minutes. It won’t look perfect yet—this is normal.

Place the bowl in the fridge for 1 hour.

Remove and whip again for several minutes.

Return to the fridge for another hour, then whip again.

Repeat the chill → whip process until you reach the texture you love. Sometimes this takes quite a few rounds.

Scoop into a clean glass jar and BOOM!

How I Use It

All-over body moisturizer

Hands and cuticles

Dry patches (elbows, knees, heels)

Face at night

Kids’ dry skin and winter cheeks

It melts right into the skin and feels nourishing—not greasy.

I even used it to prevent stretch marks while I was pregnant.

Storage Tips

Store at room temperature

Keep out of direct heat and sunlight

Always use clean hands or a scoop

If it melts, just pop it back in the fridge and re-whip

Final Thoughts

This simple, old-fashioned skincare staple has replaced a shelf full of products in my home—and I’m never going back. Once you start whipping tallow, there’s no going back.

Happy whipping 🤍
