The meat that I’m cooking up today is from my 2018 Muley (pictured above) that I harvested with my 270 Ruger American on Montana Public Land.
What do we want!? Meat! When do we want it!? Right Now!
The immense privilege it is to harvest an animal while hunting public land is something that I will never take for granted, it is both spiritually and mentally healing. Not only does this meat help provide for my family, but knowing that hunters play a key role in wildlife conservation is a real good feeling to have. Regulated hunting has never caused a wildlife population to become threatened or endangered. You bet your ass, that is a fact. Learn more about Conservation by visiting Montana FWP.

Bush wacking through God’s country isn’t for the faint of heart.

Here is How To Make Venison Taste Less Gamey
Prior to grilling, soak the venison steaks throughout the day or overnight in buttermilk. This will help “Bleed the meat” which is a large source of the gamey flavor.
(Avoid using a crockpot to cook venison as it tends to hold in all the flavor making it taste more gamey.)
I recommend using a Smoker to cook, well, basically everything.

You can make buttermilk simply by adding vinegar to regular milk from the carton. BOOM, easy does it.

You can also marinate your venison steaks in soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt or garlic before throwing them on the smoker.
Rinse wildgame very well with water and braise or brown them before adding to stews or soups. This will help get rid of some of the blood.
Consider adding bacon (always add bacon), garlic, onions, mushrooms and plenty of seasonings. You can use spices to disguise the gamey flavor.
And there you have it folks, follow these steps and you will have some of the most exquisite, tastiest, lean, mean meat you’ve ever had!
